Corran College by excelling in teaching and learning creates opportunities
for excellence for all its students through an all-embracing well
balanced education. We aim to achieve the highest standards of learning
and behaviour in a caring atmosphere where all students feel valued.
This policy has been drawn up in conjunction with the staff, Board of
Management, the Parents Association and students of Corran College.
Rationale for Policy
Our enrolment and admissions policy sets out to fulfil the statutory requirements of the following:
1. The Education Act 1998
2. The Education Welfare Act 2000
3. The Equal Status Act 2000
4. The Vocational and Education Acts 1930-2001inclusive subject to:
(a) The Department of Education and Science regulations and Programmes
(b) The rights of the Patron i.e.V.E.C, as set out in the Education Act
(c) The school's Mission Statement
(d) The funding & resources available.
Corran College is non selective in it's enrolment of students. The school
supports and respects the principles of inclusiveness, equality of access
and parents' rights to enrol their child in a school of their choice.
The school nurtures respect for students' beliefs, culture, values, language
and traditions.
The school follows the curricular programmes as detailed in the school's prospectus, as prescribed by the Department of Education and Science, which may be amended from time to time in accordance with Sections 9and 30 of the Education Act ,1998.
Publicising of Enrolment Details
School management personnel visits all primary schools in the catchment area
in January and February. The school prospectus and enrolment details
are distributed to the students and their parents and are available from the
school by request. Enrolment dates are advertised in the local media and an
open day is held at the school to enable prospective students view the school and its facilities.
Enrolment Procedures
Students wishing to enrol in Corran College must complete an enrolment form, signed by a parent/parents along with an original birth certificate on 31st March of the school year preceding entry.
Post-primary school students must be aged 12 on the 1st January in the calendar year following the child's entry into first year.
Enrolment Criteria
Equality of access and participation is the key value that determines
the enrolment of pupils in our school. No pupil is refused admission for
reasons of ethnicity, special educational needs, disability,
language/accent, gender, traveller status or religious/political beliefs and values.
Our school works on the principle that it caters primarily for children from it's
own community and catchment area. If the school receives enrolment numbers
in excess of 40 as set by the Board of Management, the selection
procedure below is implemented in this order of priority.
1. Siblings and step-siblings residing at the same address as a current pupil.
2. Pupils from primary schools within this school's catchment area, i.e. this school being the nearest post-primary centre for school transport purposes.
Feeder Primary Schools:
In the matter of applications from students who are refugees or asylum- seekers, the Board of Management acts in accordance with the policy developed by
the Irish Vocational Education Association representing the thirty
three Vocational Education Committees.

relevant Department of Education & Science provisions in relation to:
Students with Special Needs
The school facilitates students with special education needs. The Principal
meets with parents/guardians to discuss the child's needs and the school's capacity to meet those needs.
In certain cases a Case Conference may be called involving all the professionals (including teachers of practical subjects) dealing with the child to ascertain his/her particular needs. Parents/Guardians will be requested to provide or
to permit the relevant authorities to supply a copy of the child's medical
and psychological reports. The school authorities will assess how the needs
will be met. If further resources are required an application will be made to
the Department of Education and Science for resources i.e. special
needs assistant, specialised equipment, furniture, transport etc.

Repeat Leaving Certificate
Students intending to repeat a complete Leaving Certificate or individual subjects must apply in writing to the school principal on or before 2oth of September of the year in which they wish to repeat. An interview will be arranged by the principal and Career Guidance Counsellor for the applicant.

Reservations by Board of Management
While recognising the rights of students and parents to enrol in the school, the Board of Management has a responsibility to respect the rights of the existing school community and, in particular, the students already enrolled. This requires balanced judgements, which are guided by the principles of natural justice and acting in the best interest of all students. The board of Management would seek to promote the greatest good of the largest possible number of students at all times.
Right of Appeal
Parents have the right to appeal a refusal to enrol a student under Section 29 of the Education Act 1998. Firstly the appeal is made to Co Sligo V.E.C, Quay St, Sligo and if a parent is not satisfied with the outcome, an appeal may be made to the Secretary General, Department of Education, Cornamaddy, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.
