Welcome back:
Welcome back to the students and staff of Corran College after the summer holidays. We would especially like to welcome the first year students and wish them every success during the year. We also welcome new staff members to the school: Mr. John Ward (metalwork) Ms. Loretta Gaughan (home economics) Ms. Aideen O' Shaughnessy (science,maths) and Ms. Aileen Doherty(guidance). We hope they enjoy their time working in Corran College.
Retirements:
The students and staff of Corran College would like to take this opportunity to wish Mr. Jerry Moran and Mr. Owen Garvin very long and happy retirements.
Mr. Moran a native of Westport Co. Mayo has taught metalwork in this school for most of his career. Mr Garvin (Boyle) has taught science and maths for most of his career in the school also.
We would like to thank them both for their contribution and dedication to education over the years and wish them well for the future.
Mid Term Break:
Corran College will close for the week from Monday October 26th. Classes will resume on Monday November 2nd. We hope everyone enjoys the break!
Girls Active:
The Girls Active Program will be beginning in Corran College on Tuesday November 3rd from 4-5pm and will run for a number of weeks. The girls will be taking part in multi-sport classes this session. Thanks to Ester Mooney and Teresa Kilgannon who visited the girls in school taking part in the program to chat about it. While they were in the school they held a fun workout class with the girls, which was very enjoyable.
Denim Day:
Denim day was held in the school recently. By taking part in denim day students helped raise much needed funds for The Irish Youth Foundation, a very worthy charity indeed.
Ploughing Championships:
Students from the school attended the ploughing championships in Co. Kildare recently. Mr. Flynn, Ms. O' Shaughnessy and Ms. Doherty accompanied the group. A very enjoyable day was had by all.
M.S. Readathon:
Some junior students will be taking part in the M.S. Readathon running from October 16th to November 16th. By taking part students will be raising money for the 7,000 people living with Multiple Sclerosis in Ireland.
P.L.C.Graduation
A Graduation ceremony was held in Corran College on Thursday evening. Many invited guests attended, Mr Shaun Purcell CEO Deps Eamonn Scanlon and John Perry, repesentatives of the Board of Management and the Parents Association Students received certificates in Level 5 Childcare, Level 6 Supervision in Childcare, Business Secretarial Level 5 and Nursing Level 5. Ms Bernadette Bannon representing FETAC congratulated the students and presented the certificates.
Special Achievement Awards were presented to Caroline McKenna and Carina Byrne for their commitment and achievements. The Awards were sponsored by Eamonn Scanlon..
Mr Purcell commended the students and their families who made it possible for them to continue on their courses.
Comhairle na nOg
Representatives from all class groups attended an activities day in the Clarion hotel. They took part in discussion forums òn the following themes AlcoholDrugs and Young People, Road Safety and Mental Health. The students found the workshops very beneficial
LET Programme
Ms Louise Armstrong from the LET programme visited the school to give a presentation to students and their parents. This year the ten First selected students will attend the Lusty Beg Island Centre on three residentials. The LET programme is delivered by Young Enterprise Northern |Ireland and Junior Achievement Ireland. The aim of the programme is to promote peace and reconciliation between 600 young people from Northern |Ireland and the Border counties.
First Year Parents Night
A very successful Information evening was held last week for parents of all first years. Mrs McElhone addressed the group and explained that the Transition Programme was almost complete and the students had settled in very well at the college. Ms O Shaughnessy, Year Head, gave a presentation on Study skills and School prize schemes. Ms Doherty Guidance Counsellor gave presentations on subject choices and their importance. Ms Bradley from School Completion explained to parents that her role was to assist students with various programmes to remain in school up to Leaving Certificate.
Access Education for Schools was presented by Carol Gallagher from St Angela's College who detailed the many supports and activities provided by Access Education from First year to Leaving Cert. Mr White, Home School Liaison explained his role to the parents . This was followed by question and answer forum.
